What do you mean by "functional-strength"?
Traditional strength training done predominantly with machines fails to appropriately mimic natural human movement and often times fails to address key core strength components such as abdominal and low back strength. At pillarPERFORMANCE our strength training involves movement-oriented exercises that enhance core stability, improve balance and coordination, and elevate the heart rate. The functional-strength gains developed in this gym will extend beyond our walls and into your everyday life.

What is core conditioning?
Core conditioning refers to training the body's central stabilizing system incorporating muscles of the abdomen, low-back, hips and pelvis. Not only essential for a flat stomach or "six-pack" abs, core conditioning is absolutely essential for maintaining a healthy back and proper posture. All stability and strength starts at the midsection where the body's center of gravity lies, and no personal training program would be complete without a properly administered core-training program. Utilizing exercise equipment from stability balls to balance disks and foam rollers, pillarPERFORMANCE provides an all-encompassing core-training program suited to meet each client's individual needs.
Why such an emphasis on balance & stability?
Webster's Dictionary defines balance as it pertains to the human body as "bodily equilibrium or stability." Extending beyond the idea of "not falling over", balance applies to our ability to maintain proper body position while in movement and while stationary. Alongside core-conditioning, pillarPERFORMANCE acknowledges the importance of improving balance & stability within a well-designed exercise program. One of the negative results of the aging process is a decrease in spatial awareness and stability which can result in serious physical repercussions. By utilizing a variety of exercise techniques which safely promote improved neuromuscular coordination, we can not only slow down this detrimental effect of the aging process, but actually improve balance and stability in clients of all ages.

How long will I have to do Pilates before I see results?
The average active person, doing 2-3 sessions per week, should see some results within 10-12 sessions. This will vary depending on each individual and factors such as the number of sessions a person takes each week, whether they are private or semi-private, whether they participate in other fitness training programs, and/or whether they have any existing injuries. This is why we recommend any new student to commit to a minimum of 10 sessions to get the optimal sense of how Pilates will benefit them.
